Position summary

As a journalist you have the overarching responsibility to prepare, write and edit copy for the publication of news in addition to ensuring deadlines and quality standards are achieved. Liaising with each publications editor, you will manage and decide upon coverage, decide angles and leads, write, proofread and sub-edit copy. Conducting interviews, sourcing leads and event participation in the pursuit of content generation is also a requirement of the position.

Main responsibilities

  • Read, evaluate, decide, edit and typeset materials into InDesign submitted for publication on a daily basis
  • Develop content ideas and rewrite stories, including social media content taking into consideration reader appeal and reader responses
  • Plan the contents of each publication according to the publication’s style, editorial policy, and publishing requirements
  • Coordinate with colleagues to determine topics, events and stories for coverage
  • Monitor news-gathering operations to ensure utilization of all news sources, such as press releases, telephone contacts, radio, television, wire services, and other reporters
  • Establish and maintain contacts with public relations personnel
  • Allocate space for story text, photos, illustrations and interviews according to space parameters and copy significance, using knowledge of layout principles
  • Meet with Sales, Marketing and Production personnel to discuss commercial activities, promotions and sponsorships
  • Disseminate each publication to its readership using distribution software
  • Represent each publication at industry functions and trade shows, including taking photos and conducting interviews where necessary

Decision Making Authority

The incumbent is expected to work within established routines and in close collaboration with the Managing Editor & Publisher, Editors and General Manager. The incumbent must be capable of managing her/his own daily workflow in accordance with set priorities established in liaison with the Managing Editor & Publisher. Key decisions are made with reference to the Managing Editor & Publisher.

The incumbent is to coordinate output with other writing staff and will be required to subedit and proof work to achieve business objectives.

Typical experience

One to three years of commercial work experience coupled with formal qualifications. Desktop publishing experience is preferable together with a good command of Microsoft Office, InDesign, Email, WordPress and Social Media channels.

Conditions of Appointment

Full-time and conditional upon the satisfactory completion of a six (6) month probationary period. Salary to be negotiated and is dependent on experience and is inclusive of compulsory superannuation payment of 9.50%
