Virgin Blue chief commercial officer Stefan Pichler made the most of the carrier’s first Pacific Blue flights to Papua New Guinea on Monday. He took the opportunity to brush up on his bongo technique, with a personal drumming lesson from a welcoming PNG chief at Port Moresby.

Pacific Blue will now operate four direct 737-800 flights a week between Brisbane and the PNG capital, with the services also set to become a codeshare with Airlines PNG once approved by PNG regulators. Airlines PNG ceo John Fitzgerald said: “Since late 2005, Airlines PNG has already brought significant competition to international routes between Papua New Guinea and Australia. “We’re pleased that the commencement of Pacific Blue operations will introduce a strong and successful regional competitor onto the Brisbane route.”
